Information

ALGAL TOXINS

Toxic bloom-forming phytoplankton species are known to produce bio-toxins.

Dinoflagellates, raphidophytes and diatoms are common species known to produce toxins.

Effects and poisonings caused by toxic bloom-forming phytoplankton species:

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP)

Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP)

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP)

Neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP)

Azaspiracid shellfish poisoning (AZP)

FISH KILLS

Some of the common causes of fish kills are:

1. low level of dissolved oxygen in the water;

2. toxic substances (i.e. chemicals discharge);

3. toxic algae;

4. fish killer algae;

5. eutrophication.
